Imaging Samples

Imaging has become an important part of most radio stations, a part I personally take very seriously. Although I highly recommend Jingles (and only from JAM Creative Productions), many stations hire the big voice and create their own sound. My philosophy is, if you can afford it, do both.

If there is one thing I love to do, it's imaging. I must, because I've done it for a variety of stations over the past several years. The writing and assembling of imaging is one of the key components to a successful radio station, a component, many PDs either ignore or don't consider. It is one of the few ways in this age of mass media, that your station can stand out. It's a production element that should not be overlooked nor sold to the lowest bidder.

By the way, if you are looking for a voice guy, I highly recommend Sam O'Neil. Sammy is a great guy, has outstanding pipes and creates magic with some of his off the cuff remarks during his sessions. I've worked with Sammy twice and he is a true pro.

Now, then. Here are some samples of the effort.

In Milwaukee, I wanted to create a signature sound for WSSP. It had to be big, bold, cocky and aggressive. I worked with our imaging guru John McDonugh to create the sound. John and I both did pieces, but the demo is just of my work.

In Joliet, I was the operations manager for five stations. I did the imaging for WJOL (NT) on a regular basis. In February of 2003, we launched a new brand, Classic Rock WRXQ. Because of secrecy, I had to clandestinely do the imaging in my studio at home

In February of 2004, we launched a second new brand when we flipped our alternative station WILL Rock to the new Star 96.7 (AC). Again, all of the imaging for the launch was done secretly in my home studio. We didn't stunt this time, we just put it on the air at 7pm, so I created a transition piece of the launch.

In Birmingham, then WJOX PD Brett Seale hired me to do his imaging and loved my philosophy of being the 500 pound imaging gorilla. We did some pretty direct stuff there, mostly in the vein of promos..

One of the other things I did at WJOX was create some memorable bits. Sonny & Wimp loved the fact that I could go into the studio and come up with wild stuff for their show, especially fake commercials to sell Wimp's book "Plaid and Parquet". I also created bits for the afternoon show.

In Nashville at WNSR, we were the little guy always trying to kick the giant in the knee. We really ticked off some people in the market with our bold, aggressive promo style. I don't think Mr. Johnson, our voice guy, ever had as much fun as he did doing some of these promos.
